SEBUM – GOOD OR BAD?

So many clients have been complaining about their oiliness on their face. However, never have they least expect that this oil is actually a good natural moisturizer that Nature bestows us.

This natural oiliness is known as sebum. It is produced by our sebaceous glands that reside in our skin. Different part of the body have different amount of sebaceous glands. Of course, those areas that are badly needed to prevent dehydration and dryness definitely contains more.

Sebum is produced by sebaceous glands to act as a natural barrier in between the skin and the external factors. When the surrounding makes our skin dry, our skin system will be triggered to simulate sebaceous glands to produce sebum. Sebum will be secreted to the top layer of the skin to prevent our skin from getting too dry or starting to crack.

When skin tends to get too dry, fine lines could be developed. Hence, it is not surprise that oily skin clients tend not to get fine lines easily. And as you age, the activity level of your sebaceous glands drop and that is when you will slowly feel your skin getting drier.

The problem comes when sebaceous glands produce too much sebum. How much is much? Different people have different threshold. The problem will worsen when you have dead cells not shed off properly resulting in clogging. Then pimple and acne could start to set in with the proliferation of P. Acne bacteria.

So, what is what? Sebum is a good natural moisturizer to our skin. Make sure that you do not have over-reactive sebaceous glands that resulted in too much sebum secretion. Keep a sufficient oiliness to soften your skin but if it is too much, perhaps you may want to visit a beauty therapist for consultation.
