VITAMIN D VS SUNSCREEN

The battle of Vitamin D versus sunscreen continues endlessly. The dilemma that we are facing continues. On one hand, we should be enjoying what Mother Nature has given us, the free "flow" of Vitamin D from sunlight. Yet, we have to apply sunscreen constantly to block the harmful UV.

So, what is what now? What should we do now?

Some information about Vitamin D before we touch on debating this case. Vitamin D is actually not a vitamin, though the name suggests that. It is actually a hormone known as calcitrol. When our skin is exposed to the sunlight, this hormone will be produced to help in assisting in the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in our body.

Most of us often neglect Vitamin D related food in our diets. So, even if we are not “exposing” enough to the sunlight, Vitamin D should be obtained from our supplement or more balanced diets. In fact, we only need small amount of the sunlight to trigger the production of Vitamin D in our skin. Most of the sunscreen in the market is not a 100% UV protector. As such, we do expose to a considerate amount of UV from the Sun.

So, should we remove sunscreen to absorb more sunlight so that we could have more “free” Vitamin D? Not applying a sunscreen is a “never to do thing”. Not applying sunscreen potentially increase our risks of getting skin related problems, such as photo-aging, skin cancer, pigmentation, etc.

Hence, the answer is to choose a sunscreen that suits you. Avoid long hour of sun exposure. Small amount of sunlight exposure is good enough to trigger Vitamin D production. Vitamin D could be obtained from our supplement or more balanced diets if you think you are not getting enough. Never remove sunscreen or not apply sunscreen and put yourself in the sunlight for long hour to enjoy “free” Vitamin D. it do not worth the price!
